DIY Short Curly Hairstyle Tutorial

Short Curly Hairstyle

If you want to dazzle ’em with your short curly hair. . . then go REALLY curly!

Do you know the difference between ordinary everyday curls, and curly hair that really turns heads? The answer can be summed up in just a few words . . . the right haircut, the right hair products, and the right styling technique.  If you weren’t born with perfect, natural curls that fall effortlessly into place, then of course you know getting there will require a little time and effort.  But then, for that special event where you want to put on a new look and be absolutely smashing . . . it’s well worth a little effort!

If your hair type is heavy and stick straight, trying to create a curly hairstyle will be wasted effort. This short curly hairstyle tutorial gives steps on how to create a long lasting head full of healthy, shiny, bouncy curls. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to get it the way you want it. It’s a good idea to do a practice run or two before a big event; that way you’ll learn which products work best, how much product to use, and just the right size and amount of curls look best.

Products You’ll Need

If you want more volume to your hair, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, like Matrix Amplify Shampoo . Otherwise use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Graham Webb is another product line I like so I’ll stick with recommendations from this line, but you can use a similar product type. That would be a Thermal spray or Wax pomade in a product line you like. Here is what else you’ll need:

  • Thermal Spray – Graham Webb Heat Response Soft Finish Spray

  • Wax , Pomade — Graham Webb Brit Style Wax Pomade

  • Curling Irons – Using two different small barrel irons will give a fuller more textured look

Styling the Look

  1. Section your hair down the middle and then clip up.

  2. Drop down approximately one inch wide horizontal sections at a time starting at the nape of the neck.

  3. Spray a one inch section at a time with, Graham Webb’s Heat Response Soft Finish Spray, and curl using a spiral-wrap technique.

  4. Alternate the direction you spiral each curl, it will give the end result more interest and volume. If you have two sized irons, alternating these will give an exaggerated look of fullness.

  5. Repeat this process till done.

  6. Finish the hairstyle by using your fingers to work a bit of the Wax Pomade into the strands. This step will provide definition and separation to your curls.

  7. If your hair is too long on top to naturally get the height as shown in this picture, lift sections and pin underneath on top of your head. It will give height and a more curly look to your entire head.

Try a pretty little sparkle into your short curly hairstyle and have some. . . fun. For more great pictures of great hairstyles check out our Pinterest Curly Hairstyles and Wavy Hairstyles Boards.

How To: Prevent and Repair Damaged Hair

damaged hair

Fall back in Love with your hair

There comes a time in our lives where we all realize we have done damage to our hair and wonder if it’s fixable or not! Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. All textures have a breaking point, whether it’s from the blow-dryer, flat iron or chemical over processing. But by using the right products to protect your hair, most damages can be prevented that usually come from the overuse of heat, too much chlorine or chemical services.

Start with a good shampoo and conditioner.

To keep hair healthy and promote good hair growth, the hair and scalp needs to be kept clean. When the hair is too dirty, oil and skin cells build up which clog the pores, decrease hair growth and contribute to dandruff. Use the right shampoos and conditioners for you hair type. Redken is a product line I love and they carry a variety of lines for different hair textures. My favorite shampoo and conditioner now which I highly recommend is All Soft by Redken. It adds fabulous shine with olive oil and avocado oil, and it leaves even the driest hair feeling soft!

Use a leave-in conditioner

Using a leave-in conditioner can be really helpful for protecting hair. It’s a 10 Leave-in conditioner is another product that I highly recommend. A small bit hydrates the hair and leaves it feeling really soft and shiny! According to an old wives tale, some believe over using a product will help your hair grow longer and stronger . . . it’s hog wash, less is always more.

Deep condition your hair

Every 2-4 weeks a deep conditioning treatment should be considered, my favorite is Joico K-pak deep penetrating reconstructor for damaged hair and it’s great for all textures. Regular deep conditioning treatments are huge for helping repair damaged hair and strengthen it against future damage.

Don’t forget to trim it!

Healthy hair should be trimmed every 4-6 weeks to maintain fresh ends. Don’t be fooled by advertising, split ends can never be repaired by a product. They can be made to look better temporarily with a product, but trimming the ends off is the only way to get rid of damaged hair. And, if damaged hair is not cut off, it will keep splitting up the hair shaft, making the hair weaker, promoting even more breakage.

 Be gentle with wet hair

Always be gentle and use a wide tooth comb or a detangler when combing through wet hair. Wet hair stretches and breaks easily so this will put less stress on the hair shaft and cuticle. I also like to use a blow dry cream by It’s a 10 products to thicken fine hair or relax wavy hair for a more straight appearance.

Less alcohol is better

When comparing products, always look for those with less alcohol or perfume in the ingredients list. Alcohol and perfumes are known to dry out the hair. Try changing over to shine serums like Super Skinny by Paul Mitchell for a great finishing product.

After just a few weeks of good healthy hair habits and treatments, you should see noticeable results in your attempts to repair your dry, damaged hair. And from this point forward, maintaining healthy hair will be easier too!

It’s guaranteed you will fall in love with your hair all over again!

Natural Hair Treatment Tips

Hair Protein Treatment

Four natural hair treatment tips to avoid damaged hair

All too common hair tasks such as styling, blow-drying and straightening can result in damaged hair. Most of us know the common hair treatments such as getting a regular trim, using color protective hair care products and deep conditioning every few weeks. However, there are a few alternative and more natural hair treatment tips that users at are reporting great success with. In addition to being more economical, these hair treatment tips have help helped other women grow hair faster while making it look and feel a whole load better.

Warm Coconut Oil & Olive Oil

This 50/50 mixture is traditionally used to improve the general health of hair and help rid it of damaged hair. It’s suggested that you massage a small amount of the hair treatment mixture into your roots and scalp, leaving it for an hour before rinsing with lukewarm water and your usual shampoo.

Avocado Conditioner

Avocado can make a great eco-friendly conditioner which helps retain your hair’s moisture and hair health. Pick one of the brighter colored avocado’s which are nutrient rich. You need to remove the skin and seed and then crush it to form a thin paste. You’re then ready to apply it on damp hair which you should leave for at least 30 minutes. Once done, simply shampoo your hair with cold water.

Egg & Milk Mask

This concoction will give your hair a nice protein and calcium shot resulting in a gorgeous shine. For this mask you’ll need two eggs and a quarter glass of milk. Blend it together so that it’s nice and frothy and work all the mixture into the roots and ends of your hair. Allow it to soak whilst covered with a shower cap for 10 minutes. Then wash it out with your usual shampoo and conditioner treatment.

Beer Hair Treatment

Probably the most unusual of these hair treatments and one that only recently came to our attention was the use of beer to help repair damaged hair whilst increasing its shine and volume. These benefits apparently arise from the inherit protein and sugar that beer contains. You’ll need to take the beer into the shower with you and apply it from root to tip after you have shampooed and rinsed. You will need to have left the beer to go flat before applying and its best to use traditional ale or lager. Leave it for 2 minutes and then rinse with cool water and your regular conditioner to get rid of any unwanted scents. Actress Catherine Zeta Jones stands by this treatment which helps give it some credibility.
