Tips for Choosing Bridesmaid Hairstyles

5 Questions to Help You Decide on the Right Look

As a bridesmaid you get to be the bride’s sidekick. From making important decisions, to choosing a dress, you’re her go-to gal. But on the big day, you don’t have to compromise on looking gorgeous in order to be a doting bridesmaid.  So while you help her decide on white or ivory, take the time to also consider the following questions to help you find a fab bridesmaids hairstyle.

1. How is The Bride Wearing Her Hair?

Before I start a bridal party I always ask the bride,”Do you want your hair to be totally unique? Or do you mind if the bridesmaids have a similar style?” If she wants her hair to be one-of-a-kind, then that helps to direct the kind of style the bridesmaids will wear (if the bride’s hair is all down, then I’ll style the bridal party with their hair partially up). If this isn’t important to the bride– then it’s not as much of a factor, but it’s always an important question to take into consideration.

2. What Type of Wedding Is It?

You don’t want a formal french twist for a beach wedding, just like you wouldn’t want messy beach waves for a black tie evening. The type of venue, time of day, and how formal the event is, are all factors to consider when settling on your finished look. This doesn’t have to restrict your style but can help you to narrow your options down to something appropriate for the occasion.

Black Tie Wedding = French Twist, Hollywood Waves, Polished Buns, Clean Pony

3. What is The Style of The Dress?

Does the dress have a beautiful detail on the back you want to show off? Then an updo is the way to go. Does it have a plunging neckline or is it strapless? Then it might be nice to have hair on your shoulders. Also what is the feel of the dress? A glamorous gown would be complimented with a more sophisticated style whereas a more romantic dress would go well with soft waves or a looser updo.

4. Should All The Bridesmaids Match?

This is another question I ask the bride before beginning the bridal party. Some brides want all the styles to be the same, whereas some just want the styles to compliment each other. I prefer when bridesmaids’ hairstyles have some continuity, but I don’t love when they’re all “matchy matchy.” Recently I did a wedding where we incorporated a braid into each of the different hairstyles. This is a great way to maintain similar styles, while still keeping it fresh.

5. Is It Cute?

No matter how great a style looks in a picture, what’s important is that is looks great on the bridesmaid! Consider if the style will compliment your face shape and features. If you have a larger forehead, then a high volume style might accentuate it. A slicked back style or tight updo would enhance a round face shape. If you’re unsure about what works for you, ask you hairstylist for suggestions. That way, when the wedding day arrives, you’ll be confident in knowing what kind of style looks best on you.

I love when I see a bridal party where each bridesmaid looks uniquely beautiful. After all, you were each selected to stand beside the bride for your individuality and personality! By asking the right questions and communicating with the bride-to-be, you can find a bridesmaids hairstyle you both love!
