7 Secrets to Having the Braid Styles You’ve Always Dreamed Of

Braids Will Never Go Out of Style; Braid Styles Are in Our Genes!

If you love braids like I do, you know this is not just some fad that became fashionable in ’79 when Bo Derek made them famous in the movie “10”. Braids are in our genes! There is evidence that women were tempting caveman with braids as far back as 28,000 BCE. Wherever ancient works of art are found there seem to be evidence of women braiding their hair. No other hairstyle even comes close to competing as the most popular hairstyle of all time. That being the case, don’t you think it is about time you found out how to do braids right?

Braided hairstyles are quick and easy to do once you get the hang of it.  You can style your hair in a chic looking braid and this look will go anywhere, be it casual or formal. Braids are easy to pull off and comfortable to wear. Here are some creative ideas for braided hairstyles:

1. Braided Bangs

Braided Bangs

As far as braid styles go, there is nothing quicker or easier than braiding just your bangs. Start with a side part and comb out a 1 to 2 inch section of hair to braid. Do a traditional 3 section braid and pin it underneath your hair.  Or, use decorative hair pins to secure the braid and add a bit of bling to the style. This easy braid is subtle and sweet and it gives your hair a unique style.

2. The Braided Bun

Braided Bun Hairstyle

Braid styles from the Victorian era are always a favorite with long locks twisted up in feminine buns and braids. Here is a small trick to get a gorgeous braided bun. Start by french braiding both sides from the temples to the top of the ears, then finish with a regular 3 strand braid tying the ends with an elastic. Leaving both of the braided sides out and brush remaining hair into a low messy bun. Take the side braids and twist them up into the  bun. Use bobby pins to secure. The key here is to make sure that the side braids stand out in the twists. You can easily add a flower, bow, barrette or decorative hair comb for effect.

3. Headband Braid

Grecian Goddess Braids

For a headband braid, separate your hair from front to back at the ear. Take a section 1 to 2 inches wide from behind your ear and braid it as you would a traditional 3 strand braid. The wider the section the bigger the braid. Tie the end with an elastic. For a look like this one, backcomb your hair for height at the crown and pin it into a bun. For added softness, let some face framing layers fall out. Now, sweep the braid over your head and secure it underneath the bun with pins.  The braid should look like you are wearing a headband over your head. For a different effect, try braid styles like a french braid or fishtail braid.

4. Twisted Braid Buns

You can add a twist to your bun with this braid style. This is a fairly simple hairdo for a casual night out that adds a fun texture to your hair.  For this look, separate hair from front to back at the ear. Come the back into a ponytail. Take small sections and twist the hair until it curls onto itself. Pin them into the base of the ponytail. Backcomb the top for height and smooth it over pinning it at the top of the ponytail. Twist the hair at the sides and secure them into the base with pins. This look doesn’t need accessories, but a bit of sparkle never hurts!

5. Braid the Wool

Braided Wool Hair

Don’t have neon colored hair for a great looking braid style like this? Not to worry, you can add wool to your hair to create dazzling effects. Start by making a braid in the traditional style and add a thick strand of wool midway. Fashion this into the braid by pulling it along with a strand of hair and you will have a colorful looking creative braided bun. Try this with different color combinations of wool for a dazzling style!

6. Fishtail Braided Bun

Instead of the same old, same old braid down the back, try a fishtail side braid wrapped into a low bun! Create volume and body in your hair with volumizing products and a blowout with a round brush. Backcomb to the top and comb it through with your fingers for a textured effect. Try this hairstyle with the fishtail braid as that stands out the most and you will have great looking textured hair with lots interest.  Twist the braid into a low bun and secure with pins. Add hair accessories to this braid style for a sparkling effect!

Move Over, Fishtail – Meet the Lobster Tail Braid!

How the Lobster Tail Will Change the Way We Think About Braids

Whether your hair is thick and sleek or a tendrily pouf a soft braid can be fun as well as fetching. There is a reason why on most every runway these days, you can see the major designers opting for braids .  . . they flatter the face better than any hairstyle you can name. Braids are way under utilized as a beauty option, especially those of you who are gifted with heart, oval or diamond face shapes. But, if you’re tired of the same old, same old, I’ve got a treat for you.

Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston, has shared his tips on how to create the Lobster Tail Braid, a messy and textured twist that is easy to create and doesn’t even requiring braiding skills . .  just twisting! Depending on the occasion, the Lobster Tail can be as deconstructed or as neat as you like.

The Lobster Tail Braid DIY, How To

Start with day-old hair to achieve the messy and textured look of this braid. Use a texturizing spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray at the roots to eliminate any natural oils that can flatten your hair.

  • Step #1 ~~ Gather your hair to one side, while leaving a few front pieces of hair out on the opposite. Curl these pieces with a 1-inch barrel curling iron to add more shape around your face.
  • Step #2 ~~ Separate your hair in half, a front and back section, and make three small sections out of the back section. Twist each one individually before joining all three to make one twist. Secure with a clip so you can work freely on the front section. Don’t worry if it untwists a little bit, you can re-twist later.
  • Step #4 ~~ Take the front section, split into two small twisted sections and then combine to make one twist.
  • Step #5 ~~ Join the front and back twists, make one complete twist and then secure with 5-6 bobby pins near your ear. This will hold together the beginning of the twist.
  • Step #6 ~~ Spray texturizing spray again on the hairs below the bobby pins to create fullness and then make two twists with this remaining hair and combine the two twists into one, twisting all the way down. Don’t twist too hard; let it be a little loose to give it more thickness and some texture.
  • Step #7 ~~ Before securing with a hair tie, put bobby pins UP throughout the twist almost like a skeleton for the twist and then secure with a hair tie. The pins will hold the twist in place.
  • Step #8 ~~ Finish off with a light hair spray, such as Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray.

Don’t get discouraged if your Lobster Tail Braid comes out a bit messy! Mario says it is easy to make it neater by adding additional bobby pins up and through the twist, securing more pieces.

If you want to add a little “something” to the end of the Lobster Tail, Mario recommends wrapping a small piece of hair around the hair elastic and pinning it with a bobby pin behind the twist.

Like the fishtail, this is a versatile, sophisticated look that you can wear to an event or for a lunch outing. It is also a great look for fall’s chilly temperatures because it is a style that works well with a hat.
