Curly Hairstyles for Naturally Curly Hair

Learn How to Get These Curly Hairstyles that Won’t Mess with Mother Nature!

Got natural curly hair? Don’t hate it . . . Embrace it! Curly hairstyles are sweet, sexy, and ultra-feminine! So many of my curly haired clients choose to go smooth and work against their natural curl by using relaxers, blow dryers, hot rollers, flatirons or curling irons. That’s fine, it’s a personal choice, but when chemicals and hot tools are used over and over again in order to make your hair do something it doesn’t want to do . . . your hair inevitably ends up paying the price. Instead of putting in all that hard work and damaging your hair, why not take the path of least resistance and enhance your curly hair instead?

Learning to love your natural curls can be liberating. If you’ll look around at some iconic, natural beauties, you’ll find that enhancing their natural tendencies, rather than fighting them, seems to be one of their top beauty secrets. Plus, haven’t you found that no matter how hard you try, mother nature seems to have her way in the end anyways?

Here’s a quick and easy tutorial from Tamara, of Ford Models, on how to get 3 totally chic, natural curly hairstyles from one haircut. She demonstrates easy ways to make the most of your naturally curly hair. In addition, she gives her favorite product suggestions to keep hair healthy and shiny, and your curly hairstyles looking fabulous!

    Step by step how-to tips:

    • Step 1: Curly hair needs lots of moisture to stay healthy and hydrated so regular conditioning is a must. In addition to using a conditioner after you shampoo, and a deep conditioning when needed, apply a leave-in conditioner before styling your hair.  Apply it from mid-shaft to ends and comb it through with a wide tooth comb to decrease tangles. I’m a big fan of Paul Mitchell Leave-In Conditioner because it’s lightweight and good for all hair types.
    • Step 2: To define natural curls, Tamara suggests scrunching a product like, Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious into your hair while it’s still damp. This product is one of my personal favorites! You only need about a nickel size amount of product for shoulder length locks.
    • Step 3: Let your hair air dry whenever possible. Or, use a diffuser attachment when choosing to blow dry your hair.  The diffuser attachment helps to ‘diffuse’ the force of the air so you don’t blowout your natural curls. If you choose to air dry your hair, remember to not touch it until it is completely dry, or you run the risk of added frizz.

Getting a great looking hairstyle doesn’t mean you need to spend a ridiculous amount of time on your hair. Instead of fighting your curls, embrace them by using the right products and these styling tips for perfect curly hairstyles every time!  If you’re  frustrated with frizz, check out my article Frizz Product Review. The Best Ways to Tame Frizzy Hair

Attractive Woman Examining Her Dry Frizzy Hair

    Four Frizzy Hair Remedies

Fighting frizzy hair is an ongoing battle for sure, so hairdressers and product manufacturers are always working on the problem.  Tips and tricks for fighting frizzy hair are improved on from year to year. So, what shakes out as your best ways for taming frizzy hair today?

Of course, smoothing treatments like keratin hair relaxers, Brazilian treatments and other smoothing treatments, will tame frizzy hair and are available in hair salons for about $300.  Initially, there was a lot of controversy on these smoothing treatments, specifically those that emit formaldehyde, a well-known toxin.  Better smoothing treatments are available now without the use of these harmful chemicals. If an in-salon smoothing treatment just isn’t in your budget this year, here are the best tips today for smoothing your locks and subduing frizzy hair at home.

    Tame frizzy Hair

Use the right frizzy hair products for your hair type

Frizzy hair is usually dry hair, which needs to be moisturized. If you have dry hair, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as a regular routine.  A leave-in conditioner as well as a weekly deep conditioning treatment when the weather is hot and humid can do wonders to end frizzy hair.

Add a last cool rinse in the shower to close the cuticle for more shine and squeeze dry with a towel and not rubbing your hair dry to avoid ruffling up the cuticle.

    Look for labels on product brands you like that contain buzz words like, moisturizing, anti-frizz and straightening. Renowned stylist, Nick Arrojo of “What Not to Wear,” says are his favorite smoothing products are silicone serum, straightening balms or defrizzing creams. Apply these products to damp hair before blow drying or flat-ironing. Silicone serum, creams and oils have been the big sellers this year for minimizing frizz and creating lots of shine. Here are my favorites;

    • de Fabulous Amazon Secret MuruMuru Anti-Frizz Shampoo
    • Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque
    • Macadamia Oil Treatment

Another type of product to watch for in defeating frizzy hair, especially in tropical climates, is an anti-humectant. An anti-humectant will coat and seal the hair to prevent moisture in the air from getting into the hair shaft and swelling the hair. Aveda’s Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade, a bit goes a long way. It repels moisture and leaves a satiny finish to hair.

Eliminate frizzy hair with an Ionic blow-dryer

Shampoo less, condition more, and try one of the many Ionic blow-dryers on the market. Ionic technology works great for smoothing and adding shine to the hair. I’m using a professional brand ionic dryer, Hana air from and I absolutely love it!  Ionic rocks!

    Tame frizzy Hair

     A good haircut matters

Have your hair trimmed regularly to keep the ends healthy.  Wavy and curly hair types should get a layered haircut versus a one-length hairstyle. Layers will lighten curly hair to allow for more defined curls.  Wavy hair types will have more defined waves when cut into layers.

Steer clear from razor-cutting if you have frizzy hair. Razoring the hair is great for creating texturizing techniques and face framing layers, but it is the curse of death for frizzy hair types. Razor cutting will increase frizz for those most susceptible to it. Razoring shaves the hair shaft thinning the ends and not giving clear and clean blunt ends.  Thinned out, razored ends, will frizz every time!

    Frizzy Hair Fixes

Frizzy Hair Fix; Find Out How

We have all needed a good hair fix for frizzy hair at one time or another. Frizzy hair can creep up on us out of nowhere sometimes . . . especially in summer, so here are some ideas for a frizzy hair fixes if you come down with a case of the ‘frizzies’.

    Hair Fix for Summer Frizzies

Summer frizz is usually caused by damaged hair along with the hot, dry weather that comes along with summer. Frizzy hair is the result of dried out strands. So what is the hair fix for summer frizz? Moisture, moisture, moisture! By using a deep conditioner weekly, you can help prevent dried out frizzy hair.

One deep conditioner I really like is Enjoy Hair Mask, because it leaves your hair feeling silky smoothed and super moisturized. Another good practice is to rinse your hair with water and apply a conditioner before you get into the pool (or ocean). The conditioner will act as a barrier to any chemicals from the pool or harsh salt water from the ocean and give you ultra moisturized locks at the end of the day.

Frizzy Hair Fix When Humidity Runs High

A shine serum is a great fix for frizzy hair! Humid weather, like the kind you can find in Florida, is also a big cause for frizzy hair. A shine serum is a great hair fix for humidity. Shine serum tends to not only be good shine enhancers, but great frizz fighters too. To fight frizzy hair in humid weather, try blow drying hair until it is completely dry and then using a shine serum to finish your style. Silicone, which is a key ingredient in shine serum, helps to combat humidity and fight frizz. Try a shine serum like Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss, that has silicone in it. I use this one all the time before and after styling to keep my strands frizz free.

    Hair Fix for Flyaway Hair

Dryer sheets are a quick and easy hair fix for flyaway hair! Maybe you don’t have a problem with the frizzy hair as much as you do with flyaway hair. If this is the case, your hair fix may be sitting on a shelf in your laundry room now. Next time you find your hair full of static and uncontrollable, reach for a dryer sheet to help combat your problem. You can run a dryer sheet over your brush, comb or even over your strands for a quick hair fix for flyaway hair. When flyaways are the problem, you can keep a dryer sheet in your purse for a quick hair fix . . . and as an extra bonus; you will smell as fresh as clean linens!

Frizzy hair can be combated with one or all of these hair fix suggestions. If need be you can carry a ‘hair fix kit’ in your purse. Your ‘hair fix kit’ can include a travel sized shine serum, dryer sheet or maybe even a hair band for those ‘can’t be fixed’ hair days. Hopefully these hair fix helpers can get rid of the frizzy hair for you once and for all!
