Kinky Hair Shampoo Recomendations

Kinky Hair

Kinky Hair . . . What is the best shampoo?

The key to getting the right shampoo for your specific kinky hair, is finding one that works with your hair type and gives your hair what it needs now, at this time.

Women in my class Finding the Right Hairstyle for You! are always asking, “What hair care products would you recommend for my kinky hair?” What shampoo and hair conditioner should I be using? There are dozens of hair care products out there that claim to be especially formulated for curly, wavy or kinky hair. To help you sort through the good stuff vs. the junk, I’ve decided to do a series of “best of” articles for shampoos, hair conditioners and hair styling products for each hair type in a series over the next few weeks.

If you are happy with your shampoo, then don’t change it. But, if your hair just isn’t up to all it can be, then read on . . .

Some years back I read celebrity hairdresser Andre Walkers’ book, Andre Talks Hair. In it, he categorizes hair types better than anyone else I have ever read. He categorizes hair types into, straight, wavy, curly and kinky hair and then has sub-categories in each type i.e. fine, medium, coarse or whatever fits in the specific category. I’m going to use Andre’s categories, look for the one that best describes your hair type.

KINKY HAIR – although this hair looks tough it is the most fragile of all hair types. This hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type, and cuticle layer acts as a barrier to damage from a blow dryer, combing or chemical hair treatments. Chemical relaxing of the hair is used often as a way to make this hair type easier to control.

There are two sub-types with kinky hair, tightly coiled and what Andre describes as a “Z” pattern. Two Sub-Types
of Kinky Hair

Tightly coiled hair type when stretched has an “S” pattern to it. The type “Z” pattern when stretched bends instead of coiling. So type “Z” is a bit drier than the other because the natural oils from the scalp have a harder time traveling down the hair shaft. Both types need lots of moisture. Andre, (Oprah’s  hairdresser) says, “this hair type must be shampooed at least once a week.” He prefers twice weekly shampoos or even more if you have an active lifestyle. He says, “Oprah’s hair always looks and feels driest when it needs a good shampoo.”

For a gentle daily shampoo, Aveda Rosmary Mint Shampoo is great and smells great too! Biolage Ultra Hydrating Shampoo is another good choice as well as Paul Mitchell – Awapuhi shampoo

If you do any hair straightening or use hair color, you’ll want shampoos formulated for chemically treated hair. Bumble and Bumble Creme De Coco Shampoo or Bed Head Moisture Maniac Shampoo are both good choices.

Dull and lifeless

A clarifying shampoo can work wonders for all hair types, if there is hair care product or hair color build-up on your hair. How do you know if there is product build up on your hair? If your hair becomes dull and lifeless or feels coated and looses its shine. Everyone who uses hair coloring or uses hair styling products can benefit from a clarifying shampoo periodically. Keep a bottle on hand for periodic use, it can work wonders! A clarifying shampoo is formulated to strip hair care product build-up off the hair, that ordinary shampoos can’t reach. It will bring back shine and body to your hair! One I like is Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, and that will work well for all hair types.

Remember your shampoo needs can change seasonally, so if your questioning if you should change your shampoo . . . you’re probably right. Don’t be afraid to give it a try.
