What Does Your Halloween Costume Say About You?

Halloween Hairstyles Define The Look!

I love Halloween, even though I admit, I haven’t celebrated the day in a costume in quite a few years. But, I still love to see what others choose to be and how they put their ideas together . . . into form. It’s just as interesting to me to see WHO or WHAT people choose to become for Halloween, as how they interpret it and put it together.

Homemade costumes are always my favorite. Everyone has their own twist on costume design and character portrayal but those who create themselves from scratch seem to have the best time of it, in my eyes. People let down their reserves and loosen up instantly in costume . . . and it doesn’t seem to matter who they are for the day, as they have fun becoming the vision of their creation.

I was reminiscing with my BFF¬†the other day of Halloween’s past when we worked together in a hair salon. Halloween is a holiday that inspires us to have more fun. Do you have a Halloween memory that stands out? I hope so! Ginger and I always reminisce of the year she was Glenda, the Good Witch of the North (easily recognizable.) She wore a perfect dress, with layers of crinolines, making the biggest skirt possible with sparkles randomly sprinkled on top, reminiscent of fairy dust that caught the eye from different angles. Her naturally big, long, blonde curly hair to her waist was styled halo like with the perfect witch’s hat, only fit for a good witch. She was a show stopper when she waved her magic glittery wand (with a star at the end) and granted wishes to the lucky.

I chose to be Harpo Marx because he made me laugh and I knew I would have fun playing him for the day. I rolled my long hair with rags when damp the night before and it turned into a short afro that curled up to my ears. I picked it into shape, sprayed my deep brunette hair a golden blonde and put on a top hat. I had baggy pants held up with suspenders over a flannel shirt and trench coat filled with candy. I carried an annoying horn I honked in place of speaking . . . how did they put up with me all day?

We helped clients with hair styling ideas they could do at home to make their Halloween costume come to life. We did a few Halloween hair creations, for clients who were going to parties and were serious about taking home the coveted prize for ‘best costume.’ These hairdo’s usually involved lots of back combing (only a professional will tackle,) some spray-on color, (in every color you can imagine) and some sort of hair ornaments or twig like thingies to add the final touch!

Sometimes, the hair that defines the person like deep black, slick straight, Elvira (or Cher) hair; a Marilyn Monroe champagne blonde, retro coif, or the bride of Frankenstein beehive. For the guys a classic Elvis pompadour, Dracula’s slicked down jet black hair with a defined widows peak or the ever classic caveman with wild man hair.

Who or whatever you decide to be this Halloween you’ll be fabulous if you capture some aspect of your psyche to play act . . . and don’t forget the hair, the hair!

A few classic Halloween personalities . . .
