OTC Hair Products That Pros Swear By

Rihanna with her hairstylist preparing a short hair style

What’s Not To Love About These Deals?

When we’re ready to try out new products, there are at least a million different sources to get recommendations from; YouTube, blogs, magazines, sales people, friends and more. But if you want the ultimate advice for achieving certain hair looks, we think its best to go to the source, the creators, the masters of style, the industry professionals.

Not so long ago, hair stylists wouldn’t be caught dead recommending anything BUT professional products. Not so anymore. Now, many celebrity and runway hair stylists are fessing-up to using everyday OTC hair products that can be found at your local department or drug stores. Here are just a few that you may want to give a second look the next time you’re wondering which way to turn.

Short Hairstyles Big Finishers

Hair chameleon Rihanna’s hair stylist, Ursula Stephens, swears by Bed Head Manipulator for creating texture and hold for short hair styles like Rihanna’s infamous pixie cut.  She uses this as well as Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade to tame ends and add a glossy finish to cute short hairstyles like Rihanna’s. These two products are  great for quickly taming and creating texture for short cuts.  Retailing for less than $20, these products are a great addition to your daily product wardrobe.

Best OTC Finishing Spray . . . Period!

A good finishing spray is essential to keeping your style, well, a STYLE, and L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, ($12) is a hair industry icon. It is a staple at fashion weeks around the world, photo shoots and celebrities personal stashes. It is mostly beloved for it’s excellent hold with a light finish. It doesn’t have the stiffness of other effective sprays, and an added benefit . . .  its easily removed simply by brushing through your hair! It’s been said by more than a few industry professionals, that this spray is a necessity!

Long Hair Miracle

Lauren Conrad’s hair stylist, Kristen Ess, considers Soy Tri-Wheat Leave-In Conditioner by Healthy Sexy Hair, “instant hair nutrition in a bottle.” This product contains soy protein, great for adding strength and moisture. Conditioners are mandatory, no matter what type of hair you have, but if you prefer one that is super lightweight and easy to use, give this one a try. This super-detangling, normalizing spray is a steal at roughly $7 . . . and what long haired damsel doesn’t need a product to dissolve those nasty snarls and tangles, that make for really bad hair days!

These are just a few surprising assets to celebrity hair stylists’ glamboxes. We’re not saying we don’t have fabulous professional products that we love, we do, we do! But, seriously, who doesn’t like a deal? Next time you find yourself watching any type of ‘behind the scenes’ footage featuring celebrities or fashion shows, keep an eye on what hair products are being used, you may be surprised by what you see lying around!
