A Short Hairstyle for Every Face Shape

A perfect symetrical round face

Find Your Ultimate Haircut!

After my wedding I got the itch that many new wives get. I wanted to chop off the hair that I had just spent an entire year carefully growing. I picked out a dramatic, sexy bob from a magazine. After an exciting 45 minutes in the chair, I was sorely disappointed when I looked at the finished product: an adorable, sassy hairstyle, that looked totally wrong on me.

It’s an easy mistake; picking the haircut that you like without considering if it will look right on you. The easy solution is to take into account your face shape when selecting  your next adorable short hairstyle.

Sleek Bob: Heart Shaped Face

Rihanna short layered bob and side bang

Rihanna’s heart shaped face is complimented with this sleek bob and dramatic side bang. Because heart faces have a wider forehead and a narrow chin, the side bang helps to slim the forehead while the pieciness around the face adds fullness around the chin area. Heart faces want to opt for smoother styles and angular or side bangs rather than a blunt bang.

Playful Pixie:  Round Face Shape

Ginnifer Goodwin: popular pixie haircut with baby bang

Ginnifer Goodwin looks perfectly sweet and feminine with this wispy pixie haircut. With her round face, the volume in her crown and asymmetrical bangs elongate and add definition to her face. With a round face shape, you want to ditch the smooth hair, and opt for volume and texture. Also, be sure to let your hairdresser know you want softness around the ears and neck. Clean lines tend to look more masculine. Round face shapes look best with haircuts that are soft and wispy instead of blunt, clean lines.

Layered Wavy Bob:  Square Face Shape

Keira Knightly’s square face shpae is offset by romantic waves. Square face shapes are complimented best by wavy or curved hair rather than stick straight styles. Waves help to soften a defined or angular jawline. A layered bob is also ideal, while straight, blunt bobs can tend to be too boxy for a square face shape. This bob length creates a subtle softness around Keira’s striking chin.

Shaggy Short: Oblong Face Shape

If you have a longer face shape, then take a style note from Kimberly Wyatt with her ultra sexy shaggy haircut. Her piecey bangs disguise a larger forehead while wispy layers add playful texture without too much fullness. Oblong face shapes should avoid extra volume and super long styles that can make the face look even longer. Bangs and shorter hairstyles are a great solution to longer face shapes.

Style Chameleon:  Oval Face Shapes

If you’re among the lucky few with a perfectly oval face, then you can be a hairstyle chameleon! Generally, any hairstyle is flattering for oval face shape. This year is a perfect time to be bold and go for one of the hottest haircuts of the season, from an ultra short pixie cut or a soft layered bob.

If you’re unsure about your face shape, your hairdresser should be able to set you straight. Don’t be afraid to ask their opinion about the shape of your face or if they think a haircut would be right for you. Short haircuts are adorable, and especially popular for 2013, but make sure your choosing one that’s going to compliment and flatter you. Not to mention, that the right hairstyle can de-emphasize aspects of your look that you don’t love, while enhancing your best features–and that sounds to me like a win/win!
