High Braided Bun Tutorial with a Twist

High Braided Bun with a Twist

An Easy (and super cute) Hairstyle Option this Spring!

More than ever, there are a ton of adorable and fast options to create sweet, relaxed updos on your own hair. Not to mention with Facebook, and Pinterest, Twitter, and whatever else (I’ve lost track…) there are so many picture tutorials for easy and innovative hairstyles. I confess that even as a hairstylist, although a picture says a thousand words, sometimes I need a little extra explanation to recreate that style that looks so fast and easy in the pictures! So here I’ll take a moment to give you a more in depth explanation of how to create the “High Braided Bun” with a twist!

    Tease Crown of Hair

    Step 1:

Take a triangle section at the crown of the head and use a comb to tease underneath the top layer of hair. You should tease more if you want more volume, and less if you want a more natural look.

    Make a high pony tail

    Step 2:

Collect hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head and use an elastic to secure.

    Divide har into two braids

    Step 3:

Divide hair into two sections and braid each section securing the braid with an elastic. If you have thicker hair, or want to create a more intricate look, you could divide hair into three braids.

    Pancake the Braid

    Step 4:

Using a technique called “pancaking,” use your fingers to loosen and pull at the braid. For a more “undone” look you can pancake more or for a cleaner look you can do it less.

    Style the bun

    Step 5:

Take one of the braids and wrap it around the base of the ponytail.

    Secure first braid

    Step 6:

Use bobby pins to secure the first braid.

    Pin braid underneath

    Step 7:

Pin tail of the braid underneath so it’s not visible.

    Wrap braid to create bun

    Step 8:

Wrap other braid in the opposite direction outside of the first braid.

Secure second braid to create a bun

    Step 9:

Secure second braid with pins and hide tail of the braid inside the bun.

    Use a finishing spray

    Step 10:

To ensure a style that lasts you throughout the day, use a firm hold finishing spray.

To add a twist, add a cute hair accessory, like a bow, to complete the look. This hairstyle would look feminine and sweet with all the floral patterns and cute dresses in style this spring! Hair Bun Basics

    Julia Stiles Hair Bun

     Hair Bun Styling Tips
    “Hair Bun Basics”

The beauty of the bun is it’s a classic, chic, effortless hair style. Wet or dry, positioned to the center or the side, all you need is two hands and elastic bands and pins. First, gather hair into a ponytail (exactly where is up to you) and catch with an elastic band.

Try a coated elastic—it won’t damage or tear out your hair. Begin to twist hair, spiraling it around the base of the pony until it buckles back on itself. Tuck the thinner pad of the hair bun underneath and lock in place with pins.

Here are just two examples of the many ways to rock the bun:

Julia Stiles’ braided hair bun This look is perfect for a quick fix and can work with long or shoulder-length hair. Julia’s given it a looser, lived-in look. The back is a ponytail thats been braided, with little bits that pop out.

    • GET JULIA STILES LOOK: Here, Julia’s braid is wrapped and pinned to the head using a mix of bobby pins and hair pins. Or, as an alternative, go a bit more structured and sleek.
    • Here’s how:
    • 1. Make a clean, low side-part and brush hair tightly back into a sleek pony.
    • 2. Do the braid or braids (depending on your length of hair) in the same manner: textured and loose.
    • 3. Wrap and pin To really mix it up, place your bun on far to either side and add a beautiful hair accessory.

This style is clean and sophisticated, but still very romantic.

    • 1. Style hair into waves, then part tresses in a halo just in front of the ears or at the center.
    • 2. Gather hair with your hands and secure into a low bun.
    • 3. Using medium tension, take the front pieces and frame the bun, securing with hair pins.
