What Does Your Halloween Costume Say About You?

    Halloween Hairstyles Define The Look!

I love Halloween, even though I admit, I haven’t celebrated the day in a costume in quite a few years. But, I still love to see what others choose to be and how they put their ideas together . . . into form. It’s just as interesting to me to see WHO or WHAT people choose to become for Halloween, as how they interpret it and put it together.

Homemade costumes are always my favorite. Everyone has their own twist on costume design and character portrayal but those who create themselves from scratch seem to have the best time of it, in my eyes. People let down their reserves and loosen up instantly in costume . . . and it doesn’t seem to matter who they are for the day, as they have fun becoming the vision of their creation.

I was reminiscing with my BFF the other day of Halloween’s past when we worked together in a hair salon. Halloween is a holiday that inspires us to have more fun. Do you have a Halloween memory that stands out? I hope so! Ginger and I always reminisce of the year she was Glenda, the Good Witch of the North (easily recognizable.) She wore a perfect dress, with layers of crinolines, making the biggest skirt possible with sparkles randomly sprinkled on top, reminiscent of fairy dust that caught the eye from different angles. Her naturally big, long, blonde curly hair to her waist was styled halo like with the perfect witch’s hat, only fit for a good witch. She was a show stopper when she waved her magic glittery wand (with a star at the end) and granted wishes to the lucky.

I chose to be Harpo Marx because he made me laugh and I knew I would have fun playing him for the day. I rolled my long hair with rags when damp the night before and it turned into a short afro that curled up to my ears. I picked it into shape, sprayed my deep brunette hair a golden blonde and put on a top hat. I had baggy pants held up with suspenders over a flannel shirt and trench coat filled with candy. I carried an annoying horn I honked in place of speaking . . . how did they put up with me all day?

We helped clients with hair styling ideas they could do at home to make their Halloween costume come to life. We did a few Halloween hair creations, for clients who were going to parties and were serious about taking home the coveted prize for ‘best costume.’ These hairdo’s usually involved lots of back combing (only a professional will tackle,) some spray-on color, (in every color you can imagine) and some sort of hair ornaments or twig like thingies to add the final touch!

Sometimes, the hair that defines the person like deep black, slick straight, Elvira (or Cher) hair; a Marilyn Monroe champagne blonde, retro coif, or the bride of Frankenstein beehive. For the guys a classic Elvis pompadour, Dracula’s slicked down jet black hair with a defined widows peak or the ever classic caveman with wild man hair.

Who or whatever you decide to be this Halloween you’ll be fabulous if you capture some aspect of your psyche to play act . . . and don’t forget the hair, the hair!

    A few classic Halloween personalities . . .

    Favorite Vampire Women Celebrity Hairstyles

In honor of the newest vampire movie out, New Moon, I decided to compile my favorite vampire women celebrity hairstyles . . . complete with celebrity hairstyles how-to.

Favorite Vampire Women Celebrity Hairstyle: Ashley Greene

    Vampire Women
    Ashley Greene’s Twilight Premier Ponytail

Twilight star Ashley Greene had the perfect ponytail for her premier look. It was voluminous and shiny and perfect for the event. I know that I’m not the only one wanting this look, so here’s how to get it:

Celebrity hairstyles expert, Ted Gibson, who styled Ashley’s hair gave some pointers on how to copy this look. He used a thermal spray at the root and a styling cream on the rest of her strands. He blow dried the hair with a round brush to create lots of volume and then used a large barrel curling iron to create a smooth curl with lots of volume. He teased the hair in the front, to create lift, smoothing top strands and then pulled back into a ponytail and secured with a hair band.

Favorite Vampire Women Celebrity Hairstyles: Sarah Michelle Gellar

Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Simple Layers

    “Vampire Women Celebrity Hairstyles”

Alright, I realize that Sarah Michelle Gellar played in the TV version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but this was originally a movie, so it made my number three spot for favorite vampire women celebrity hairstyles. During this shows run, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, had some noteworthy hair styles. Many women rushed to the hair salon to get her simple and subtle layering which was occasionally enhanced with waves.

If you want Buffy’s wavy hair look, blow dry hair with a round brush for volume and then put hair into medium-sized hot rollers. When cool to the touch (about 20 minutes), remove and finger style waves.

Favorite Vampire Movie Celebrity Hairstyles: Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward in Twilight and New Moon, has the dreamiest hair around. Thick, lush, wavy and perfectly messy, Edward’s big hair look in these movies gets top spot for my favorite celebrity hairstyle in vampire movies.

If you want a style like Edward’s, it helps to have a thick, wavy texture to your hair. Enhance this style with plenty of texturizing products including my favorite, Enjoy Texturizing Spray, along with a spray wax. Another product line I like is TIGI’s Bed Head, since this line is specifically developed to give you that perfectly messy look.

Follow these tips that we got from Martha Stewart to get this beehive easy Halloween hair style:

    • Step 1: You’ll need one skein of yellow yarn cut into 50 three-foot strands; divide into five bundles.
    • Step 2: Part hair into five ponytails; secure each with an elastic band.
    • Step 3: For each ponytail, secure middle of a yarn bundle to base of ponytail with elastic band. Take half the ponytail and half the yarn in each hand. Twist the hair and yarn in your right hand together a few times in a clockwise direction; repeat with the left hand. Then wrap the twisted pairings around each other in the opposite direction. Continue until you come to the end of the yarn; secure end with elastic band.
    • Step 4: Once all ponytails have been combined with yarn, make the beehive. One at a time, coil each ponytail on head; secure with bobby pins. Tuck ends inside. Use bobby pins to attach pipe-cleaner bees, silk flowers, and plastic twigs.

Easy Halloween hair styles with neon colors!

Many of my clients wonder how to get a certain color of hair for their Halloween costumes. They wonder if they’ll have to wear a wig or if there is a product on the market available to give them quick and easy hairstyles for Halloween.

Two of my favorite products are Jerome Russell’s Temp’ry Hair Color Spray and Joico’s Ice Spikerz Colorz Styling Glue. To use Jerome Russell’s Temp’ry Hair Color Spray simply style hair and then spray the colored aerosol spray all over until you reach your desired result of color. Joico’s Ice Spikerz Colorz Styling Glue is used for looks that call for an extreme hold gel with color. Both of these products are temporary and wash out with a good clarifying shampoo.

These are all easy Halloween hair styles to achieve with just a little practice and they are perfect for Halloween. My daughter will be wearing a bee costume this year and I’ll be doing her hair like the beehive hairstyle above. Comment and let us know if you have any easy Halloween hair styles that will make your look this Halloween!!
