There are no rules or limits when it comes to choosing your Derby Hat!

Derby day is less than a month away – that’s right, The Kentucky Derby, The Run for the Roses, the most exciting two minutes in sports – it’s all happening on May 5, 2012 at the venerable Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.  What does Derby Day mean to you?  Well, if you’re reading this blog it probably means it’s time to get your derby hat on!   Just like Royal Ascot and Royal Weddings, The Kentucky Derby is where the fashionable crowd sports their fascinators and fascinating derby hats.

If you are going to The Kentucky Derby (or perhaps just a derby party,) the one rule about hats is this: “Go Big or Go Home.”  Small and dainty has no place among the brilliant creations that can be found among the horse set.  Whether your look is modern or vintage, feathered, flowery, furry or just plain fascinating . . . women top off their derby duds with a variety of ostentatious head wear.

The Hats of the Derby, according to the Official Website of The Kentucky Derby, are part Southern tradition and  part spectacle. “The Kentucky Derby hat parade is much of what makes “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” one of the greatest people-watching events in the world! From the fantastic to the sublime, there are no rules or limits when it comes to choosing your derby hat.

The same grooming and hairstyle rules apply even if your top is topped off with a spectacular creation. Your hair should be clean and styled in a manner that is flattering, and also in keeping with the rest of your outfit. If your hat is big and fancy, don’t over-fuss your hairstyle. A sleek and simple hairstyle will be a better foundation for showing off your hat. Chic buns and low sleek pony tails (we are going with a horse theme here!) work well under derby hats. The Kentucky Derby is an elegant venue, and your hat and hairstyle should reflect the same.

You probably also want to avoid too many accessories to keep your style in place.  Let the derby hat be the accessory, not headbands and clips and bows. If you need to hold your hairstyle in place, try some mousse or styling gel for texture, then secure loose strands with bobby pins that match your hair color.

Most importantly, have fun with your Kentucky Derby hat!  A great hat and hairstyle can make you feel so much better when your horse doesn’t win-place-or show!
