Get Flirty with Flapper Finger Waves

From Drew Barrymore to Tyra Banks, celebs are enjoying a blast from the past with retro finger waves. But you don’t have to be a master with gel and a comb to get this look. Fortunately, we now have triple barrel curling irons available to us to get that much loved finger wave.

    1. Divide your hair into three large sections: one on each side in front of the ear, and the back portion of your hair.

    2. Beginning on the side, take one inch horizontal sections starting on the bottom and working your way up.

    3. On each horizontal section, use a three prong curling iron, starting at the root and working your way down through the ends, spritzing each finished section with a working hairspray.

    4. When the whole head is complete, run a wide tooth comb through hair and enjoy your finished look. Either wave your entire head like Drew Barrymore, or add a wave to the front for a touch of Gatsby glam.

Go Short With a Daisy Buchanan Bob

This summer celebs are making the cut with Daisy inspired bobs.

Bob’s are not only easy to style, but are chic, feminine, and timeless.  A 20’s inspired bob can make fine hair look fuller and works great with straight, flat hair. For Carey Mulligan’s sleek look as Daisy, flat iron hair using a heat protectant on each section making sure to curve the ends under.

For a Modern Twist on a Retro Look Try the Faux Bob:

    1. Create a dramatic side part starting at the arch of your eyebrow.

    2. Use a 1 to 2 inch curling iron to curl hair 3 inches away from the root. Comb with a wide tooth comb for soft waves.

    3. Roll and pin hair at the base of your neck, allowing front strands to fall loose and frame your face.

    4. Accessorize with your favorite vintage accessory.

Get your Gatsby style by going bold with a new haircut, or just trying out a new hair accessory. Pair your retro hair with full lashes and a bold lip for a flirty look that’s truly inspired. And for more great Gatsby inspired looks check out our Retro Hairstyles Pinterest board.

High School Yearbooks Are a Great Source For Ideas on Vintage Hair Styles

Next time you visit grandma, ask her if she still has her high school yearbook. You will at the very least have lots of fun seeing some great vintage retro hair styles, and who knows maybe you find a retro hair style that is a real knockout and just right for you.

“we have lost a lot of creativity from those days of retro hair styles”

On a recent family get together I noticed a high school yearbook on the book shelf at the home of a relative. It was from the graduating class of 1936. What a treat, the females at the outing all gathered around and we had great fun looking at vintage hair styles. Somebody made the comment about how we have lost a lot of creativity from those days of spit curls. If you visit a high school today, you’re likely to see about 85% of the hairstyles being long and straight.

The other observation we made was that many of those girls from the yearbook were wearing a hairstyle that would be a knock-out today. Finger waves for an example, they are hot in Hollywood. The celebrity hairdressers are getting some big fees, for a very simple procedure.

One of my custom virtual hair style makeover clients on a recent counseling call asked about the finger wave, I told her with a little practice she could create this look at home. There are plenty of sites on the Internet that can show you how, but my favorite is reVamp which gives simple step by step directions.

Vintage Hair From the 40’s and 50’s is Hot!

Vintage Hair from 40’s and 50’s Making Big Waves

If you watched the Grammy hair you saw some of the celebrities wearing vintage hair straight out of the 40’s and 50’s’. I talked about some of them in my article yesterday on hot Grammy hair. But back in December Intake Weekly was ahead of the curve with this interesting article:

Vintage hair cuts for the modern you

Try a twist on a classic 40’s or 50’s hair for a cool new look.

    By Nicole Edwards

More and more Indy hairdressers are getting requests to bring back vintage hair.

“Vintage hair is really the big thing right nowVintage hair is really the big thing right now,” said Jason Hagemier, hair cutting coach at Reeda Todd / Aveda Lifestyle Spa/Salon.

The new vintage hair styles might have something to do with the November release of “Walk the Line,” in which Joaquin Phoenix sports a sculpted pompadour and Reese Witherspoon’s mid-century curls crown her head. But vintage hair seen today often takes a modern spin on Hollywood glamour of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Hagemier said ladies are looking to mimic the Gwen Stefani look — a 50’s retro vintage hair style that has been coined the “mush and pin,” a messier hair style with volume that he said requires some backcombing and pinning.

And men, deep into rockabilly music and culture, often steer straight for pompadour peaks. The 50’s updo and vintage hair waves.

Anyone can wear an updo, according to Hagemier. All you have to do is pile your hair on top of your head . . . fashionably. When contemplating an updo, Hagemier recommends hair styles that flatter the shape of the person’s face.

“I think that all has to do with balance, depending on your face,” Hagemier said. “You can basically wear any vintage hair style as long as you wear the correct balance around your head.”

If you’re not going for the updo look, hair can still maintain a vintage hair style by pinning a section of hair into a roll in the front and creating medium-sized hair wave around the rest of your head.

Products Hagemier uses for vintage curls: “I just like a light setting gel or setting lotions,” Hagemier said. “
