NYFW Hairstyle Tutorial: The Row’s Twisted Updo

The Row's Twisted Updo for New York Fashion Week 2013

Try One of the Hottest Hairstyles from New York Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week is not only an opportunity to get a taste of the hottest fashions of the upcoming season, it also gives us a sample of the hottest looks for hair. One thing is for sure, NYFW featured relaxed hairstyles, with natural texture  in hairstyles that were sexy and undone. Hair stylist, Odile Gilbert, created a sweet and effortless “twisted updo” for The Row, that is not only wearable, but super easy to do at home!

    1. Apply Kerastase Mousse Volumactive (Odile’s product of choice) throughout towel dried hair.

    2. Take half inch sections and twist hair to form loose “dreadlocks.”

    3. Blow dry hair while using fingers to shape and form curls.

    4. When hair is completely dry, divide into three sections, top, middle and bottom. Avoid clean partings that will create lines in your finished look. Top section should start at the top of the ear.

    5. With a comb, tease each section at the root.

    6. Twist and pin the top section, followed by the section below it.

    7. For the last section, twist and pin into the shape of a bun.

    8. Use fingers to loosen twists for a softer texture.

    9. Finish the look with Kerastase Double Force Hairspray, or a similar matte finishing spray.

Don’t worry if your finished look isn’t identical to the picture, the goal of this style is to be natural and organic. What’s fun about the “twisted updo” is that the look will be different and unique each time you do it!

This spring, embrace the effortless styles of the season, without spending hours in the mirror. The “twisted updo” is not only an easy and comfortable style, but is a huge hit on and off the runway. NYFW was a display of so many different new hair trends, but the overall motto seemed to be, “simple and sexy,” and we couldn’t agree more!To stay current with what is happening with the celebs follow our Pinterest Celebrities Board.

    Twisted Hair Knot Tutorial

Up Hair Knots with Twisting Curves

Try a New Twist to Hair Knots

This flexible updo works surprisingly well on most  hair types. If you can wear a ponytail you can wear this twisted hair knot. However, if your hair is extremely thin or fine, this may not be the best look for you.

Support products such as a medium hold gel or mouse can be used to add texture and hold to the hair.  That being said, I used only a leave in conditioner on this model. My choice; Vitamino Color, from Serie Expert, a Loreal Professional product. To refine and hold the look I finished with Kenra Volume Spray.

Updo Hair Knots Step 2 Twist

    Step 1:

    • Begin by parting the hair into thirds. The sections can vary so go ahead and be creative. Brush each section up and away from the scalp. As you hold the hair begin to twist it down onto itself.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 3

    Step 2:

    •  Twist like the image. You should have one loose end and one end with a loop.

Updo Hair Knots Step 4 Tie Ends Together

    Step 3:

    • Run the loose end thru the loop end and tie the two ends together.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 5
    Step 4:

    • My second section is larger than the first. Notice I over direct it toward the previous section.

Updo Hair Knots Step 6 Refine
    Step 5:

    • Refine with a paste wax or spray if desired. Again your choice, be creative.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 7
    Step 6:

    • Notice, I over direct it toward the previous section and wrap it round it.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 8
    Step 7:

    • Again, run the loose end through the loop end and tie them together. Use bob pins to secure the hair.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 9
    Step 8:

    • My last section is much larger than the previous two, this creates an asymmetric design. I brush this section all together and take it to the other two sections.

    Updo Hair Knots Step 10
    Step 9:

    • Run the loose end thru the loop end and tie them together. Secure with bob pins.

The twisted hair knot is a great way to change things up! For a more finished look, simply add soft curls to remaining face framing layers.

Wedding Hairstyles Series Part 1: Up-do’s

    Wedding Updo Hairstyles

Up-Do’s are the most frequently requested wedding hairstyles

The most common of wedding hairstyles requested in our salon, is an elegant up-do. My guess is this is because an elegant up-do, makes a statement that this is not just any ordinary day! An up-do for your wedding is the perfect choice to show off beautiful jewelry, the neckline of your dress, toned arms and, of course, your wedding day glow. So, for those of you who have chosen to go with up-do’s for your wedding hairstyles, here are some things I suggest to make your wedding hairstyles picture perfect.

If your bridal gown is ornate, you can pick from any number of wedding hairstyles or up-do’s that are equally as elaborate. You can choose a complex up-do, or you can add to a simple up-do by using beautiful hair accessories that sparkle and shine. The key to any great wedding is in the coordinating. Your wedding hairstyle, dress, shoes and even location should all coordinate to flow smoothly together. Keep this tip in mind when planning out your big day. If you’re looking for something a little bit different for your wedding location, have you considered getting married in somewhere like Fiji? The Royal Davui Island could be just for you, why don’t you view their Fiji wedding packages to find out more. A simple chignon works perfectly if you want the formality of an up-do without all the fuss

Searching for a wedding hairstyle that is a bit simpler? Try a loose chignon that screams simple elegance. A loose chignon would go perfectly with an outdoor ceremony or a dress with minimal embellishments. Simple chignons work great for both naturally curly girls and those with straight strands too because you can work with your natural hair when it comes to these types of wedding hairstyles.
