Beauty Tripping: Tips and Tricks from a Globe-Trotting Hairstylist

Jaclyn Wilhelm, a Senior Stylist at Nurtur Salon in Upper Arlington, Ohio, knows a thing or two about traveling. As Nurtur’s resident travel-bug, Jaclyn has visited Arizona, Ft. Myer’s Beach, Niagara Falls, the Trent River, and taken a cruise of the western Caribbean including Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize, Honduras — and that’s just in the past year. This impressive travel log combined with her experience behind the chair makes Jaclyn the ideal source for trip-friendly beauty tips. Here is a collection of Jaclyn’s best traveling tricks for our readers on the go this summer!

The first step in preparing for a trip is always the almighty packing list. For many, this simple task is anything but, well, simple. Often choosing which products to take and which to leave behind seems as difficult as selecting the destination itself. Some people find it easier when they decide to travel in a bigger vehicle similar to what you can find at Perth 4WD rental because they have more space for more products. When packing up before heading out, Jaclyn recommends to think small, simple and multi-use. Here are a few of Jaclyn’s must-haves for her travels:

Aveda Beautifying Composition

“It’s a lot smaller than a lotion bottle and a little bit goes a long way,” Jaclyn says. This composition is great at the beach as a moisturizer since it absorbs quickly into the skin and has a light lavender aroma. If you prefer an aroma free option or have more sensitive skin, All Sensitive Composition is also a great choice.

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Toning Mist

This skin care product is essential for anyone on the go. It is compact, light-weight and easy to apply, and gives your skin a clean glow – no sink required. “It is especially great when traveling a lot on a plane,” Jaclyn says. Just a mist or two on your face is a simple ritual of renewal that helps to tone and refresh your skin.

Aveda Control Force Hairspray (travel size)

“You can use it in so many different ways,” Jaclyn says. Her personal favorite is to use Control force with curly hair and leave the gel at home. Plus, Aveda’s travel sized cans are TSA approved!

Aveda Light Elements Smoothing Fluid (travel size)

This small tube of hair smoothing serum is the perfect size to fit in any bag. Plus, it only takes a few drops to make a dramatic difference in your hairstyle. Jaclyn recommends taking this product pool-side. “Apply a couple drops of it and your hair can go from pool-day frizz to out to dinner sleek,” she says.

Aveda Stress Fix Roller Ball Concentrate

This certified organic aroma features lavender, lavandin and clary sage, and the roller ball applicator is easy to carry in your purse or even a small clutch. The relaxing blend is clinically proven to reduce stress and is perfect for a moment of inner peace before, during and after your voyage.“It’s good to get you in the vacation mood,” Jaclyn says, “plus the applicator makes it multi-use as a perfume or massage oil.”

Now that you know what to bring along, making it all fit in your suitcase is the next challenge. “I’m not the best packer because I over pack,” Jaclyn admits with a smile. Nonetheless, there is one packing trick that is sure to save you suitcase space while keeping your style options open: leave the curling iron and blow dryer at home! “All you need is your flat iron,” Jaclyn says. “You can use it for flat-iron curls or for straight styles.” Not to mention flat irons generally take up less space than curling irons. As for the hair dryer, Jaclyn says that most hotels have hair dryers in their bathrooms already, so don’t worry about bringing yours along.

Once you arrive at your chosen destination, finding ways to keep your hair and skin looking its best away from your home turf is always a bit tricky. Try these three simple tips to make sure your look is always on point no matter where you roam.

  • Pack extra bobby pins. Be sure to carry these in your suitcase, purse, clutch, etc throughout your trip.“Bobby pins can change your day hair into a night look in no time,” Jaclyn says. It only takes a few pins to create an effortless, side swept look perfect for a night on the town.
  • Always pack a bottle of nail polish that matches your mani/pedi for any needed touch-ups.
  • Be sure to keep these make up must haves on hand: moisturizing lip balm, a lip stain, lip shine and mascara. All of these products are small, simple accents that travel easily and can pump up any daytime look for evening.
