    1. […] It’s always a good idea to learn what your skin tone is because it determines what colors look best on you, whether it’s make-up, clothing or hair color. It’s especially important when applying a color next to your face that you will need to live with for a while. A quick test is to check out the color of your veins on your wrist. If they are blue it’s an indication you have cool skin tones and if they are green, you are likely warm toned. But if you don’t know for sure, you can go further and, take this  questionnaire! […]

    2. Hey! I’m planning on dying my hair an unnatural color this summer, but can’t decide what will look good. I am very pale, don’t tan (just burn), have freckles, pale green eyes with brown flecks, and golden hair. What color will look best?

    3. Hi, I have dark hazel eyes (green with golden brown specs). I have veins that are blue for the most part, although sometimes they appear green, but are blue from the inner wrist. I have light to medium skin tone; somewhat pale. My undertones are pink, I would say, if I blush easily and when I fluster, my face gets red. My imperfections are easily noticed. Acne scars are purple and red. My hair is brown with some golden brown hairs (naturally), yet from far away my hair looks dark brown, almost black.

What would be the best hair color, make up colors to bring out my eyes and skin tone?
I cannot makeout what “season” I am or what tones define my skin/hair/eyes alltogether. I do not want hair colors that will make me look older than what I am.

    7. I have blue eyes, caramel blonde hair, pale skin, and blue veins on my wrist. I was thinking about coloring my hair purple but im not sure if I should go a light purple, dark, or maybe add a touch of blue or pink in it, or just not do it. Any suggestions?

    8. I have hazelish eyes,( green, grey, brown) was a winter, jewel tones, had red (blue based) hair per colorist nice, brown/black hair too, eyes made eyes look green. Ivory skin, I went blonde, looked washed out, till I went very bright light blonde, nice, no ash or gold, clashes. At 50 pigment is changing, look young, dark hair is harsh now, red too much. I still pop in purple, emerald green etc. My eyes look green in those colors. Blue veins, am a mixture. Talked to colorists, 4 advise w/hair color. Washing out an ugly ash toner currently, don’t know what to do now. I see young women w/my coloring, not my age. Have spent too much on salons. B4, could play w/many colors, now, am lost. See so many maturing women w/bad dye jobs, hair color makes a world of difference. Any where I can send a photo? Please include those of us that r getting older and are a mixture.

    11. Hi Stefanie!

The easiest way to determine our skin tone is to look at the veins in your wrist. Blue veins are a characteristic of someone with cool toned skin, whereas green veins are a characteristic of someone with warm toned skin.

Once you determine your skin tone, you can explore which hair colors will look the best on you. How to Get the Best Hair Color for Your Skin Tone is a descriptive article that can help you find the best hair color.

    13. Hi Audrey,

The easiest way to determine what skin tone you have is by looking at your wrist. If your veins look blue, you have cool skin tones. On the other hand, veins with a greenish appearance is a sign of someone with warm skin tones.

    14. I have blue/green/greyish eyes with golden flecks, I was born with black hair but it soon turned golden blonde and became darker while I aged (right now it’s dark blonde/light brown and it even looks a bit green) I have a very fair skin with a pink undertone and I blush fast. I also got a couple of freckles on my nose. Do I fall in the cool range?
I personally feel like my natural haircolor makes me look very ill and pink. Now I decided to dye my hair, but I don’t know yet which color to choose. I like red hair, but is there any natural looking red I can get away with if I have a cool skin tone? The reds with blue undertones look very unnatural and I don’t like them to be honest. If there really is no natural red color which will fit me, what color would you advice then?

    15. Hi Bailey,

It sounds like you have cool toned skin. The easiest way to tell is to look at the veins in your wrist. If they are blue, then you have a cool skin tone.

If you are still unsure, another way to check your skin tone is to try on jewelry. People with warm skin tones look best wearing gold jewelry, whereas silver jewelry compliments those with cool skin tones.

People with cool toned skin can look amazing with dark brown hair! Try a deep brown, ash brown, or jet black color to compliment your skin tone. Check out this article for more tips and ideas!

      Good luck!

I have pale skin with pink cheeks but I can get tan also and my veins are blue. I was wanting to dye my hair a dark brown but I didn’t know which category I fell in.

    27. Hi, I am pretty confused about what skin tone I am. I can get REALLY tan, but I usually burn before I tan (at least at first). I am a natural brunette, medium to dark, but I get blondish highlights very easily (sometimes they are reddish). My veins are blue, though. I have never dyed my hair and I want to go blonde but I’m scared that I’m too dark for it. Then I see celebrities like Jessica Alba who have a darker complexion rocking blonde and it makes me hopeful. Should I chance it, and if so, what shades won’t look horrible with my skin tone??

      Comment by Laura — June 27, 2010 @ 8:22 pm

    28. Kat,
Your skin tone sounds like it may be warm for such a cool deep red hair color, but your dark blue eyes are cool. Can’t say for sure without seeing you, but it would probably look edgy. I suggest you bring a trusted friend and try some hair swatches (ponytail add-ons) next to your face to see what you think.

    29. I’m wanting to dye my hair a deep red color like red wine, kind of like Haley Williams from Paramore? But im not to sure if it would look good against my skin. I mean I want to look edgy but i don’t want to look “off.” My natural hair color is like a mousey blonde, i have darker blue eyes and my skin color is pale but a little tint of olive coloring, and my veins are green. I’m ok if i stand out with the color i just don’t want to be too washed out with it. Would it look good?

      Comment by Kat — June 6, 2010 @ 5:56 pm

    30. Emilee,
I think blondes look best with multi-tones throughout and include a darker base.
Why not try a few subtle lighter foils of blonde around the face and see how you like the color? You can always add more later.

      Comment by Barb Quinn — May 27, 2010 @ 4:55 pm

    31. I feel a little torn… my natural hair color is a dark blonde, my eye color is green with a hint of blue, my veins are blue, i have fair skin with pinkish undertones. I feel i look best in clothes colored blue, green, gray, and white. I’m not really sure what my skin tone is.
I would like to dye my hair a lighter blonde, but will it look good?

      Comment by Emilee — May 26, 2010 @ 4:47 pm

    32. Just wondering, my eyes are green (like cat green). I can wear many colors. It is hard to tell my vein color because I am tan. My natural hair color is light brown but the sun gives it a golden cast which I hate. Can I wear beige blondes or platinum highlights??

      Comment by Toni — May 21, 2010 @ 6:15 am

    33. Julie,
Sounds like your skin tone is cool, eyes probably more cool than warm and hair may be cool or warm.
Check out some hair extensions (kiosks at the mall) or a beauty store, putting them next to your face and see what you prefer.
Or ask a stylist or make up artist who can see you face to face.
